A broken spring is the most common garage door failure there is — and the most misunderstood. The springs, not the opener, do the real work of lifting the door. When one snaps, you'll usually hear a loud bang like a firecracker, and the next morning the door won't budge or the opener strains and gives up. That's not an opener problem. That's a spring.
Torsion vs. extension springs
Most doors use one of two systems. Torsion springs mount on a metal shaft above the door and wind up to lift it — they're what you'll find on most modern doors, especially double-car doors. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side and stretch as the door closes, more common on older or single-car doors. We replace both, and we'll tell you which you have when we look.
Why we replace both springs
If your door has two springs and only one broke, we'll recommend replacing the pair. They're installed together, they wear at the same rate, and a spring is rated for roughly 10,000 open-close cycles. When one reaches the end of its life, the other is almost always right behind it. Replacing both at once means you're not paying for a second service call a few months from now — and it keeps the door balanced, which is easier on your opener.
Don't keep hitting the opener. Running the opener against a broken spring can burn out the motor, snap a cable, or send the door crashing down. If the door won't lift, leave it — and if your car is stuck inside, we can almost always release and raise it by hand when we arrive.

We confirm the system and door weight, install the correct replacement springs, re-balance the door so it holds at any height, check the cables and rollers while we're in there, and cycle it several times to make sure everything runs smooth and quiet. Can I open the door with a broken spring?
You shouldn't. The springs carry the door's full weight — often 150 to 300 pounds — so without them the opener strains, cables can snap, and the door can fall. If your car's trapped inside, leave the door alone; we can usually raise it by hand on arrival.
If only one spring broke, why replace both?
On a two-spring door, both springs are the same age and wear at the same rate. When one goes, the other is usually close behind. Replacing both at once saves you a second service call within months and keeps the door balanced.
Why do springs always break in the cold?
